Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was today named the 50th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, following the unsealing of the Will of his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, who died in Lisbon, Portugal yesterday, aged 88.
Prince Rahim Aga Khan V is a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) through his daughter, Hazrat Bibi Fatima, and the Prophet’s cousin and son-in-law, Hazrat Ali, the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph of Islam and the first Shia Imam.
Throughout their 1,400 year history, the Ismailis have been led by a living, hereditary Imam. The Ismailis live in over 35 countries and number approximately 12 to 15 million.
His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan has died. I feel so blessed to have known him, & to have spent countless hours in his company. While he was my father in law for many years, he’s been my spiritual father since we met & will continue in that role, even as he transitions on.
His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family.
The announcement of his designated successor will follow.
Aga Khan IV established the University of Central Asia in 2000 in partnership with the governments of the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. UCA has an internationally recognised standard of higher education and enables the peoples of the region to preserve their rich cultural heritage as assets for the future.
The staff and volunteers of the University of Central Asia offer our condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide. As we honour the legacy of our founder, Prince Karim Aga Khan, we continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world.
Having seen the work the Aga Khan and his institutions have done in Afghanistan, I’ve a deep respect for his achievements; he was a great leader who will be much missed

This father stands as a hero irrespective of the court's decision in Flak Noor case. He took a stand for his minor daughter in a society where people remain silent in the name of honour and other rotten norms. Long live the struggle against injustice!

Government, judiciary, police & other authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan aren't more than colonial apparatus that functions as a tool to exert control over the people & resources of the region. A minor girl is in captivity & authorities are acting more like the abductors.
.. inspite of the fact that the police has been criminally negligent in investigating the matter for past 73 days, granting them another extension is horrible.
Nevertheless, I was happy to see a little women participation today led by Minister Dilshad Bano.
We'll keep fighting!
.. or face contempt proceedings; they failed to produce her. The Court was super-lenient as it not only granted 4 more days to the police officials but postponed the contempt notice to the next hearing conditioned upon non-production of the minor on 6th April...
🧵 on updates i.r.t #FalakNoorCase
Today's hearing was pretty disappointing! Looks like Prov. Govt. Police and Judiciary are trying their best to let the minor be in the unlawful custody of accused. Despite the Court's strict orders to SSP Gilgit to produce the girl today ...
Kidnappings of minor girls and attacking on Ismaili professionals in Gilgit Baltistan aren't about class, it's purely about sectarian affiliation! They're targeted because they're Ismailies! That’s it! That’s it!
