Last night, I posted on Imran Khan’s health in prison and the tweet has got a huge response. BUT here is my question: why haven’t cricketers/sportspersons in Pakistan and around the world spoken out loudly in one voice for Imran’s safety? We mix politics and cricket on the wrong issues; why don’t the stars speak in solidarity for one of their own? Itna sannata kyon? 😡

When I first coined Operation Tandoor after the Indians announced the name of their operation, I thought a lot about whether to post it - partly because of the serious nature of the threat and whether it was apt to do so at the time.

Today I see it trending for the situation in Afghanistan, and I have mixed feelings about it. Partly because Operation Tandoor was a play on the phonetics for Sindoor (which I had misspelled the first time) - but in the Afghan context it inadvertently takes on a more prejudicial tone because of one of the economic roles Refugees played in Pakistan.

Secondly, the Afghan Taliban are no one’s friends - despite the delusion the establishment had in the past until recently, and the TTP our enemies. But the choice to bomb them opens up questions about our strategic end goals. Will every incidence of terror now require such a response? What happens when the intel is bad and we have civilian casualties? Does the Afghan Taliban, who are effectively an international Air BnB for all terror groups, actually be disincentivized by war - they fail at state building but their splintering coalition will glue together in response to the external threat. And our action: does it bring the TTP and Afghan Taliban further together? And probably most importantly - our domestic insecurity is partly informed by the Afghan Taliban allowing the TTP sanctuary, but who pays for allowing them to resettle internally? It’s incredibly important to defend the border now with full force - but going forward, Pakistan needs to look at its strategy, both bilaterally and internally.
