Malaysia’s Journalism Laureate Johan Jaaffar Triumphs at Annapurna Base Camp

Veteran journalist and national laureate Johan Jaaffar has fulfilled a lifelong dream by successfully reaching the Annapurna Base Camp in the Himalayas - a feat etched into his bucket list.

Johan arrived at the base camp, located at an altitude of 4,130 metres (13,529 feet) above sea level, at exactly 11:15 AM Nepal time.

He achieved this milestone at the remarkable age of 71 years, 10 months, and 14 days.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Johan repeatedly expressed his gratitude: “Alhamdulillah, grateful” in his Whatsapp messages to his Malaysian friends and groups, including the Malaysia-Indonesia journalists fraternity, who congratulated him and shared his joy.

He was part of a spirited group of Malaysian climbers, both men and women - ranging in age from 20 to 71.

The team departed Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Day, 16 September, marking the start of their Himalayan journey with patriotic pride.
