Whilst several decades have passed since the formation of our business in the sixties, our core engineering principles remain solid. Here’s a look back at two ex-colleagues, both skilled engineers, in the 1970s turning aluminium parts on Colchester Student and Colchester Chipmaster manual lathes — long before CNC machines appeared on the scene within our business. With our team having recently returned from the 2025 Southern Manufacturing Exhibition, the event was an immersive experience of the engineering world, which brought together a wide spectrum of exhibitors, engineering professionals, innovators, academics and enthusiasts. Whilst pre-exhibition there is always a slight concern about the visitor numbers and the return on investment, pleasingly the numbers this year were high, and the interest in our capability was very strong.
Whilst some consider casting as a traditional method being challenged by additive manufacturing, and we were delighted to demonstrate how Sylatech’s hybrid additive manufacturing solution delivers parts with complex geometries at volume.
Overall, we reflect on the event as being extremely positive for Sylatech, with our team being kept very busy throughout its duration, and with a good haul of leads to follow up on. Amusingly it was our stunning, highly intricate, cast Romanesco Broccoli that really stole the show!

We never tire of searching our archives, and finding photographs of developments that led us to where our capability lies today. This throwback Thursday post dates back to 1994, with the foundry crew pouring MB1, and pulling a vacuum through the plaster mould material.
Whilst casting, in its many forms, has been used for thousands of years, by integrating additive manufacturing, Sylatech has formed a hybrid process enabling AM design freedom and complexity, with Sylatech’s casting process reliability and delivers volume production capacity.

Last week we were delighted to achieve a Highly Commended award at The Cast Metals Federation, CMF Industry Awards 2024 event.
Whilst we did not quite repeat last year's success, the judges presented Sylatech with a highly commended award, for our work with a highly complex braided mixer casting. The judges hailed the success of the casting, which has led to new work with Metamorphic AM, Photocentric and automotive manufacturers.
The component results are helping to re-establish casting as the sustainable process of choice, for the design and volume production of complex parts requiring excellent surface finish. The exceptional capability of Sylatech’s casting process challenges the self-perpetuating messaging around metal additive manufacturing.
