Breaking: Bangladesh’s new government has decided to appoint a new chief prosecutor for the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), replacing Tajul Islam. Advocate Aminul Islam is reportedly under consideration for the position. Aminul Islam was previously a member of the legal team that represented BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia — the mother of current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman — in the corruption case that led to her imprisonment.

A source has confirmed that Tajul Islam has already been informally notified of the decision to replace him. Tajul Islam declined to comment when approached for confirmation. Attempts at obtaining comment from government spokesmen have been unsucessful at the time of writing.

The ICT is currently prosecuting crimes against humanity cases against Awami League politicians and law enforcement officials accused of involvement in the killing and injury of protesters and bystanders during the July 2024 protests, which led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. The tribunal is also handling cases relating to enforced disappearances between 2009 and 2024. To date, three trials have been completed.

Three days ago, Tajul Islam told journalists that he had no indication at that time that the new government intended to replace him or other members of the prosecution team.

The possibility that the #BNP might end up in the opposition following tomorrow’s general elections in #Bangladesh has not crossed the minds of the party’s leaders and activists. They are firmly convinced that they will win the elections and form the next government. Defeat would be a nightmare for them as they are not prepared to be in the opposition. This is the BNP’s greatest weakness. 

By contrast, the alliance of Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP expects to assume the role of the opposition following the election and has made the necessary preparations.

What consequences would BNP face if it lost this election?

If the BNP loses, it will lead to the complete collapse of the party. The party will fragment and break apart. Tarique Rahman will leave Bangladesh and never return to the country’s political arena, or rather, he will be unable to do so. Most of the party’s leaders and activists will join the NCP. A small number of hardcore nationalist BNP leaders will join the Jamaat. And, some others will align themselves with the leftist parties. I could even name who will join which party, but I don’t think it is necessary to go into that here.

Anyway, in the 2031 general elections, we will see a contest between the Jamaat and the NCP, with a new leftist bloc likely emerging as a third force. There is a good chance that that bloc will join the NCP, form a new alliance, and contest that election together. However, the alliance is unlikely to secure a majority unless Jamaat — which is expected to form the government after next week’s elections — commits a major blunder during its tenure.

The Awami League inside the country will largely dissolve into a Communist Party of Bangladesh or CPB‑style left party. Leaders of Sheikh Hasina’s party who remain abroad will be the only ones still identifying themselves as members of the Awami League, and their political activities will continue at a subdued pace outside Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s history is poised to take a dramatic turn after tomorrow’s general elections. Political tension is palpable across the country. Let’s see how events unfold over the next couple of days.
