The internet is greatest tool for the democratisation of education, information or communication ever invented, and it’s not close.

Anyone, anywhere, can talk to anybody about anything.

You can learn skills, recipes, trades, languages and instruments in your own home, in your time and for the tiniest fraction of what it used to cost.

It breaks down barriers of class, income, language and geography.

The lonely can find community. The ill can find wellness. The desperate can find help.

You can read books banned from schools or by governments. You can research forgotten or forbidden history. You can fact check propaganda in real time.

I firmly believe this is largely accidental. That when it was invented and unleashed on the world, the plan was for more control not less. But they didn’t understand what they had, or the endless ability of billions of people to creatively use the tools they were handing out.

It was never supposed to be like this. And the concentrated effort of almost every government, NGO, intelligence agency and mainstream media outlet has - for years now - been heavily focused on taking this power back out of our hands.

That’s what social media bans, and digital IDs, and “misinformation crises”, and all the rest of it have always been about.

Wresting back the reins of a monster they didn’t mean to loose.
