🌳The Sounds of Summer 🌳
This is the exuvia (empty exoskeleton) of a “dog-day” cicada. Common in most of the eastern and central US, dog-day cicadas emerge annually, and are a hallmark sound of summer. ☀️🕶️
‼️🐛Hatchlings Incoming 🐛‼️
Also part of gen 2 cecropia - as our gen 1 emergences were staggered this season - we have some newcomers this morning!
Cecropia hatchlings will wander and die if food is not readily available. We give them a wreath of sassafras.
That’s right, you can’t escape us nourishing you hatchlings! You will be healthy and you will like it! 🙃🍃

🐛🐛🐛🐛 : “Hey! That’s mine!”
Easy there fellas!
Very early on, cecropia caterpillars can occupy the same space without issue.
However, as they grow, the larger larvae will bite/nibble the smaller ones, so it’s important to separate them. They’ll compete aggressively for food, push each other off of branches, and even cannibalize each other!
Fortunately for this captive-bred brood, we intervene by giving the growing larvae their own individualized space, so that they *don’t* eat each other.

Gen 2 - Brood Update
🌳🐛🌱
Many of our cecropia caterpillars from our first generation adults are approaching second instar!
This little one is beginning to show some change in coloration. In the transition to second instar, cecropia caterpillars molt into a vibrant yellow. Their appetite increases exponentially as they progress to later larval stages of development.
🍝🐛☀️
After trial testing, we can attest that our cecropia love DML-4 from Bioryza!
Having this formula ready to go has made feeding our multitude of giant silk moths much more streamlined. ☕️
We can and do still forage for several varieties of maple when necessary, but this formula has helped tremendously!
