🇨🇳🇺🇸 One little-known metal is becoming a pretty big headache for the U.S.

It’s tungsten, and the Pentagon wants more of it for weapons and its strategic stockpile.

But when the U.S. recently went looking, it ran into an awkward problem: there’s barely any non-Chinese supply sitting around to buy.

And that’s where this gets bigger than weapons.

Tungsten is also needed for advanced memory chips used in AI. Two Japanese factories making around a quarter of the world’s supply of a key tungsten-based gas shut down in July after their Chinese raw material ran out.

Now Samsung and SK Hynix are scrambling for new suppliers.

Meanwhile, China, which restricted those tungsten exports in the first place, is expanding its own production of the gas.

So China cuts the raw material, foreign factories shut down, and Chinese factories expand. Pretty convenient.

Russia has recalled Ambassador Andrei Kelin from the United Kingdom after seven years in the post, The Guardian reports. He left the country on July 21, and Moscow has not yet named a successor.

A Russian Embassy representative told the paper that relations with London have deteriorated to an "unprecedentedly low level."

The recall comes as the United Kingdom continues supplying strike drones to Ukraine that have hit several Russian oil refineries.

🇨🇳BREAKING: China slashed oil imports by 5.5 MILLION barrels per day during the Iran war and single-handedly shaved $30 off global oil prices.

That is a bigger demand cut than the entire world made during COVID, except China's GDP kept growing through it, per The Economist.

Beijing used three levers: it drew down 150 MILLION barrels of reserves, halved fuel exports, and pushed citizens onto trains and EVs while infrastructure projects were paused.

One oil trading executive put it simply: "China is the new OPEC."
