Biology is the study of poorly-designed, poorly-documented systems that work in weird and unpredictable ways and that can only be understood by messing with stuff and seeing what happens.
...so it's kind of weird that I don't feel more of an affinity for MATLAB.
In the unlikely (or very likely?) event you're reading this and still on this website, come to Bluesky! My handle is the same there (@synbiojosh.bsky.social)
The problem with conferences is after every talk I'm like "this gives me so many ideas, I want to go mess around with them"
but then there's Another Talk
I try not to get political in my capacity as a researcher but I would submit that I have not done so. I'm not that old, but I'm old enough to remember when maibstream society had a 0 tolerance policy for holocaust denial. As a Jew it's terrifying that this is no longer the case.
The owner of this website just uncritically signal-boosted a holocaust denier.
Twitter has long been a good platform for sharing ideas, incl. in science, but I can't in good conscience stick around with this.
I will be deleting my account on Sept 21st, after DNA30 in Baltimore (see you there!)
New social media deets will be forthcoming (probably same handle but on bluesky).
Today's I'm A Grad Student moment: spent about 15 minutes trying to work out what I had meant by calling a folder "TEST_TS"
Before realizing it was "TEST_T5"
Today in Uses Of AI: ChatGPT gave me a wrong answer to a programming question that nevertheless was very helpful, because I learned a lot in the process of working out why the answer was wrong
How to research:
1) Start reading paper
2) Open up new tab for each interesting reference
3) Save all new papers in "to be read" folder
4) Never close tabs
5) Never read papers
Ok before any academics caption this some sht like "🛥️my summer research plans / 🐳the fall semester" I want to remind you that it is EXTREMELY dangerous to allegorize a whale.
