this is a CRITICAL lesson in software engineering ethics. we need to shout it from the rooftops in every undergraduate curriculum. "if I don't do it, they'll just find someone else who will" is so often actually just *wrong*. finding someone else is expensive and hard.

Normally they might find another engineer to do this work, but my whole team was aligned with the privacy concerns. Twitter had also just done layoffs (aside: time is a flat circle), so there were no spare engineers around.

@FreyaHolmer That's great to hear! My experience is that this sort of thing is non-monotonic; if you do end up slipping the next day, it isn't because you were wrong about the burnout ending, it's just that, though it improves on average over time, the graph is still spiky on a micro scale.

@mark_riedl FB's approach to VR growth has always felt a little soulless to me, though, and I have a bit of a soft spot for Second Life. You need more than just money to get this to work.

This is a GOOD thing, but it's a departure from old FB misinfo policies. If Mark is willing to bend the rules here, we can't let him get away with hiding behind "policy" to defend harmful decisions.

It's politics, not principle. The decision comes first, then the justification.
