The one Grok left off the list: a box spread. It borrows against the same portfolio, but as listed index options with no lender in the middle, so it prices at near Treasury rates instead of SOFR plus a bank spread, and the rate can be locked for one to five years. Same margin risk as any portfolio-backed loan, so keep the loan well under the account’s limit. We’re SyntheticFi, an investment advisor registered with the SEC, and we set up box spread financing for financial advisors and individual investors inside their own brokerage account, currently through Schwab and Pershing. A client buying their first home in New York.
Most of their wealth tied up in stock.
The question was how to fund a substantial down payment without selling the position that made the purchase possible.
On Spread School, Samuel Deane of Rora Wealth shares the case with host Dasarte Yarnway. The client used a box spread to fund roughly half the purchase price, helping keep monthly housing costs manageable from day one.
Samuel sees the same pattern across different needs.
1. A home purchase
2. Funding a small business
3. Paying down debt
4. Covering a tax liability
In each case, the goal is similar: access liquidity without having to sell the portfolio.
Samuel is candid about the reaction it gets, “ It sounds too good to be true.” And that is exactly where the education starts.

Simplicity is the right call most of the time.
The harder cases are where advisors can add the most value.
On Spread School, Samuel Deane of Rora Wealth gives host Dasarte Yarnway his advice for advisors who have not worked with box spreads yet, and starts by admitting they are intimidated at first.
Some clients have needs that call for more sophisticated strategies. For Samuel, the key was learning box spreads well enough to know when the added complexity was actually worth it.
The rest of his advice, including how he introduces the conversation with clients, is in the full episode.

The client calls and says their mortgage payment is about to go way up. Everybody’s first answer is refinance. Refinance into what?
In this episode of Spread School, host Dasarte Yarnway makes the case for treating an ARM reset as a comparison of every source of capital available to the client, not an automatic refinance.
He covers why the house doesn’t have to be the only asset supporting the financing, how portfolio backed borrowing through SyntheticFi changes the source of collateral, why it isn’t all or nothing, and the risk questions that matter once the portfolio is the collateral. Plus the one question he wants added to every client review.

Disclosure: SyntheticFi LLC is an SEC-registered investment adviser. Synthetic VPF strategies involve options and carry risk, including the risk of loss, and may not be suitable for every client. Collars and related structures can raise complex tax considerations depending on how they are structured, and clients should consult their own tax and legal professionals. This content is for informational purposes only.
Everyone agrees the client is too concentrated. Then the words “let’s sell some of it” come out, and diversification suddenly sounds a lot less exciting.
In this episode of Spread School, host Dasarte Yarnway walks through the synthetic VPF, and more importantly, the client situation that should make an advisor think about one.
It starts with a better question than how much to sell. From there, he covers how SyntheticFi builds the structure, how it compares with a traditional bank VPF, and the tax considerations to route through the client’s tax and legal professionals.

He got into the industry by emailing wealth management firms in his town from a pizza restaurant. One replied.
ICYMI, on the Spread School podcast, Erik Goodge sat down with host Dasarte Yarnway to talk about launching his own RIA, the first client he put a box spread to work for, and what unlocked growth for his practice.
He went through SyntheticFi for that first client, which he describes as a very hands-off approach. His favorite way of explaining a box spread starts with locking in a loss, and in his words, a strategy is only as valuable as the client perceives it to be.
The whiteboard in his office now reads growth, not planning, is the main job right now. He explains why in the episode.

Funding a new strategy does not have to mean handing over the whole portfolio.
In this clip from The Single Stock Unwind, our live webinar for advisors, Corey Roun, SyntheticFi’s Director of Client Partnerships, breaks down what borrowing changes about the structure.
Instead of moving the entire position into a single strategy, the client borrows against it. The foundation stays in place, and the liquidity goes to work across multiple strategies at once.
The part advisors care about most: control. The assets sit in full custody with the advisor, not with an outside manager, and the same liquidity can be directed wherever the plan calls for it.

The hardest box spread is the first one. Not the trade, the conversation.
On Spread School, Erik Goodge tells host Dasarte Yarnway what it took to introduce the strategy to a client for the very first time.
Erik knew the strategy in theory but had never used one himself, so he started with homework for both sides: a comprehensive article covering the pros, cons, and risks. It wasn’t an easy explainer, and that was the point.
From there, the conversations did the work. They walked through the opportunity cost of not using the loan, the red-line risks, and the role of OCC clearing. By the time the client moved forward, he understood exactly what he owned and why.

Your client asks, “Wait, so how does this actually work?” And suddenly you’re six sentences deep into index options.
On October 21, Corey Roun and Tom Casper fix that. In Demystifying Box Spreads, SyntheticFi’s next live webinar, they break down what’s happening under the hood, when box spreads make sense, how they stack up against other borrowing options, and the questions clients are going to ask you.
No jargon. No options lecture. No pretending this stuff is obvious.
