An undergrad that I wrote a letter of rec for just emailed me after her interview weekend for grad school to tell me how well it went and that she followed my advice about making sure she met the people in the lab to get a feel for w/l balance. My heart is so happy!
There is nothing better on a Friday than editing a student’s thesis about 🦇 microbiomes while listening to @FernDoctor gets all hot and bothered about fern asexuality.
@SpainMicrobio @Anaerobe_annie Oh the GLCH elevators... do you remember when we got stuck in there with Tanner! I thought he was going to break his fingers trying to pry the door open!
Today we had our first pumpkin carving contest in the UMD Biology dept. Here was my lab’s entries! We did not win, so you can imagine the talent in this contest! @UMDSwenson@IntBioSci_MN
@robertnulrich Just taking a few minutes a week to listen to them about their life outside of the lab is huge. Most of them are not comfortable asking questions about how to move forward in their career or deliver for you unless they feel they can talk to you honestly and ask simple questions.
@robertnulrich I use Shutterfly https://t.co/Zzm2UnMGr3 to make them. They often have free codes so you only have to pay shipping. This is their working notebook though since we use online notebooks.
@robertnulrich Working at a REU, I have lots of undergrad researchers working with me. I have found that letting them know you understand that some weeks are full of tests (or other life things come up...) and they may not have results is crucial. They don’t always know how to manage time yet.
