Assyrians are one of the oldest indigenous peoples of Mesopotamia. For thousands of years, we have preserved our language, our Christian faith, and our identity.

During the Ottoman genocide against Christians, known to Assyrians as Sayfo/Seyfo, hundreds of thousands of Assyrians were killed.

After 2003, Assyrian Christians once again became targets of terrorism and extremism. More than 100 churches were bombed, attacked, or destroyed, while thousands of Assyrians were killed, kidnapped, or forced to flee their homes.

💔 Before 2003, around 1.5 million Assyrian Christians lived in Iraq. Today, only about 150,000 remain.

In 2014, ISIS invaded the Nineveh Plains, forcing tens of thousands of Assyrian families to flee for their lives.

🙏 We do not ask for privileges. We ask for security, dignity, and the right to live in peace in the land of our ancestors.

🌿 These churches preserve one of the oldest continuous Christian traditions in the world. Their roots stretch back to the first centuries of Christianity in ancient Syria and Mesopotamia, where some of the earliest Christian communities were established by the Apostles and their disciples. From Antioch, Edessa, Nisibis, and the heartlands of Mesopotamia emerged flourishing churches that once represented some of the largest and most influential Christian communities in the world.

For nearly two thousand years, these Christians have preserved the Syriac language, ancient liturgies, and a rich spiritual and intellectual heritage. Yet their history has also been marked by immense suffering. Repeated waves of persecution, massacres, forced displacement, church and monastery destructions, and the loss of countless manuscripts and cultural treasures have greatly diminished their numbers over the centuries. Despite these tragedies, they have endured and continue to bear witness to one of the world's oldest Christian civilizations. 🕯️❤️

This photograph is a reminder not only of a shared heritage, but also of the resilience and perseverance of the Assyrian-Syriac Christian people, whose faith and identity have survived against extraordinary odds.
