Giving testosterone to women makes them behave more fairly and less conflictive.

Researchers ran a double-blind experiment, giving women either a dose of testosterone or a placebo, and put them into a high-stakes financial bargaining game.

when women were given real testosterone, they actually behaved more fairly and were less conflictive during social bargaining games.

Turns out.. Testosterone makes you seek status.

In the animal kingdom, status comes from biting and fighting. But in complex human societies, you don't gain status by being a tyrant. You gain status through fair play, alliances, and respect.
So the hormone optimized for fairness.

But then the researchers looked at the data again. And they found that..

the women who believed they were given testosterone (but actually just got a literal sugar pill) started acting wildly aggressive and unfair.

They made incredibly unfair offers. They refused to compromise. They blew up negotiations and acted aggressively.

The hormone did not cause the aggression. The myth of the hormone caused the aggression.

When people believed they had biological permission to act selfishly, they immediately did.

They used the cultural idea of "testosterone" as a shield to legitimize their own worst instincts.
