My friends... we have lost a national treasure and REAL American hero. Billy Waugh. This man's legacy would take pages to write... Google him and you will see what I mean. MACV-SOG in Vietnam, Green Beret, and CIA SAD/SOG operator. One day while I was deployed to Afghanistan, I was sitting at a bar in a very, very special hotel, used exclusively by the CIA. This bar had floor to ceiling memorabilia and quotes. It was so overwhelming; I can't begin to put into words. As I sat there, I noticed 2 men at the end of the bar. I immediately recognized Mr. Waugh. I can count on 1 hand how many times I have been so "star struck" so to speak. This man was a legend in my community. I had to say hello. I walked over to Mr. Waugh and said what an honor it was to meet him. True to form he asked me to sit and have a drink. He asked me how I was, knowing full well that worked for the same folks he did. I told him I was rotating back home tomorrow after a 4 month deployment. As we sat and talked, I looked at the wall behind the bar and saw a very famous photo of Mr. Waugh. It was taken right before him and his MAC V SOG team did the first combat HALO jump during the Vietnam war. It was an HISTORIC moment. I commented on how cool the photo was and asked him about what he was feeling at that moment. His words to this day make the hair on my neck stand up. As we sat and talked, he introduced me to the man sitting next to him. His name was Jesse Campbell. This was one of the guys in the photo with Mr. Waugh. I was floored. About that time, Mr. Waugh asked the bartender to grab the photo and a pen. Mr. Waugh took the photo out of the frame and signed his name. The pen ran out of ink, so he asked for another. The bartender gave him a blue marker and Mr. Campbell signed it as well. This photo may very well be the ONLY photo in existence signed by 2 members of Recon Team 'Florida' prior to the first combat HALO jump in history. Mr. Waugh gave me that photo that night sitting at that bar. Words cannot express how honored I was to have him do that for me. This photo is priceless to me. It sits in my home as a constant reminder of the great men that have served our nation. I could live 10 lifetimes and not touch the contributions Mr. Waugh has made for our country. I am shedding tears just writing this. Mr. Waugh was 93 when he passed away yesterday. May God give you eternal rest in his kingdom. We will see each other again. Thank you for your service, Billy, we will not forget. RIP #billywaugh #sof #legend
