This tragic case of a 15-year-old boy with autism who died by drowning after eloping from his caregivers underscores the critical importance of specialized training and response protocols for law enforcement.
The child was initially classified as a "runaway juvenile" rather than being recognized as a missing autistic child at heightened risk of injury or death, prompting neither the immediate activation of local alert systems nor targeted searches of nearby bodies of water and traffic corridors.
This heartbreaking loss illustrates why the IACC's recommendations on wandering prevention and response should be implemented without delay. @SecKennedy@HHSGov

@FogelSylvia@PaulWhiteleyPhD And/ Or they were diagnosing individuals that were non speaking using speaking testing tools then concluding these individuals were MR (now ID.) So many clinicians made this mistake. The testing instruments are crucial. Many families have shared this story.
Two things can be true at the same time ❤️
Families urgently need #Medicaid waiver services for #autism support AND strong safeguards are also needed to keep these programs sustainable for the future.

The tragedy and trauma of self-injury in autism are a daily reality for many individuals and families. We need to do a better job identifying and treating contributing medical conditions and pain, while ensuring individuals have access to a range of appropriate treatments and supports. My heart aches for individuals and families living this reality.
Because of this incredible community, together we made a real impact during #AutismActionMonth. But Autism doesn't end in April ❤️ Join us and take action all year long at https://t.co/psDDK0uTht.
This young man's death is a tragedy that should never have happened, and my heart goes out to his family.
It's a reminder to stay focused on common ground. Whatever differences exist in our community, we can agree on this: people with the most significant support needs deserve safe, attentive, and adequately resourced care — and they deserve urgent, sustained investment in research and treatments that address the most disabling aspects of autism and co-occurring conditions — the kind that leave individuals vulnerable in settings like this one.
@FogelSylvia@and_kell@_TheTransmitter@AgeofAutism Keep doing the good work Dr. Fogel. Your leadership is inspiring . Our community & their needs should be addressed. Status quo is great if it was working before. If it’s not working then proceed differently. As they say in some situations, we are going in a different direction
The #IACC voted to send recommendations to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that could lead to real, practical support for families of children and adults with #autism, especially those at highest risk. Read our thoughts at the link in bio 💻

My ONE is Zeke. He used to struggle with apraxia. Things improved with intense therapy, functional medicine, and prayer. Now Zeke loves to talk continually about his special interests!

❤️ My ONE is Dominic. He’s 4.5 and even though he’s nonverbal, and only communicates with sounds, I know he understands me. He always has a smile on his face. He loves his animal toys and cars.
