#BreakingNews Somalia’s e-Visa system hacked — travelers’ personal data exposed
Mogadishu – November 2025 | The Africa Plus
A serious data breach has hit Somalia’s online visa (e-Visa) system, exposing the personal information of foreign travelers who applied to visit the country.
Cybersecurity experts say the system — managed by Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) — had a major security flaw that allowed anyone to access private information simply by changing a few numbers in the website’s address bar.
According to security researcher Mohamed Jama
“This wasn’t a professional hack — it was an open door. Anyone could view people’s passport details and photos with almost no effort.”
The leaked data reportedly includes passport numbers, names, photos, travel dates, and other sensitive details. Experts warn that this information could be misused by criminal or extremist groups, including Al-Shabaab, putting travelers at risk of identity theft, kidnapping, or other dangers.
So far, Somali authorities have not issued an official statement. However, sources inside the government confirm that an urgent investigation is now underway to assess the damage and secure the system.
This breach has raised major concerns about Somalia’s digital safety and international reputation, especially at a time when the country is working to attract investment and visitors.
“This incident is a wake-up call,” said one cybersecurity consultant. “Government systems that store personal data must be treated like national treasures — protected with care, not left wide open.”
