I'm curious, why is there a distinction between WordPress developers and PHP engineers?

Some people don't see WordPress as an advanced PHP platform (e.g. Laravel or Symfony)

@JamesWelbes I agree, I prefer to think of myself as a PHP engineer who happens to work with WordPress, but can easily transfer to any of the other platforms — Laravel, Symfony, etc.

As a plugin developer, you can write PHP as you would in other frameworks.
