MPP exists to encourage greater access to essential medicines and health technologies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Greater access to a single essential medicine often means that several conditions can be tackled at once. As Louie Zepeda-Teng, a health advocate from the Philippines explains, GLP-1 receptor agonists can help with diabetes and obesity, and also TB.

"If you have a problem with your blood-sugar levels, as with diabetes, it is often the case that TB medication will not work," Louie says. "The TB treatment simply does not oxidise. TB medication also increases craving for sweets and other sugar-based products. GLP-1s really kill that craving."

As the International Congress on Obesity in Mexico City, hosted by @WorldObesity, is happening now and until tomorrow, we are highlighting Louie's story as a way of demonstrating how access to essential medicines in LMICs could both help reduce national health costs, and transform the lives of people living with comorbidities.
