This is no longer a matter that should be buried under political calculations, propaganda, or endless legal manoeuvring. A man's freedom is not something a government should treat as a bargaining chip.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has become a symbol of a much bigger question: Can a government silence a political voice simply because it is uncomfortable with the message that voice carries?

The Nigerian government may disagree with Kanu. It may condemn his methods, challenge his political ideology, or prosecute him where it believes the law has been broken. But the answer to political disagreement cannot simply be indefinite punishment and the suppression of dissent. If the state believes its case is strong, then let the courts resolve it transparently, fairly, and without political interference.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence following his 2025 conviction, and his legal team has appealed that conviction. There are also continuing disputes over jurisdiction and the legal basis of the proceedings.

That is precisely why this matter must not be treated as ordinary politics.

Justice must be stronger than government. Law must be stronger than power. And the freedom of a citizen must never depend on whether the government likes his opinions.

If the Nigerian state wants credibility, it should demonstrate it through justice, not intimidation.

If the conviction survives every lawful appeal, then the legal process will have spoken. But if serious legal questions remain, they must be confronted honestly rather than buried beneath political rhetoric.

I will say it without fear and without apology:

Not because every action associated with his movement should be defended.

But because a nation that claims to believe in justice must be willing to apply justice even when the accused is politically inconvenient.

The government should stop treating this issue as though locking away one man can make the grievances that produced his movement disappear.

You cannot imprison an idea. You cannot silence a people by force. You cannot build lasting peace on unresolved injustice.

The Nigerian government should choose the path of courage: confront the grievances, respect due process, allow genuine political dialogue, and let justice not vengeance determine Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s fate.
