Patrick Swayze left us at only 57 & I’ve been thinking about Swayze more & more lately. I think the reason is 1) I love his films- like Point Break- and always find myself sinking back into them. But 2) I just don’t think there are any actors comparable to Swayze in Hollywood right now. He was raw but graceful. Masculine but sensitive. Swayze combined a lot of contradictory parts into what became an awesome movie star.

On the first Fourth of July, horse racing in America was alive and well just scattered across 30 different dirt ovals from the Hempstead Plains of New York to the tidal flats of Gloucester, Virginia. Match races wagered on a handshake. Four-mile heats under a Carolina sun. Plantation clearings doubling as racetracks.
No electric tote board. No permanent grandstand. Smithsonian Magazine put it that “colonists from Rhode Island to the Carolinas could all agree that nothing was more heavenly than a fast horse.”
