Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle Accused Of U.S. Bribery

A U.S. lawmaker, Kimberly Daniels, has accused Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle of attempting to bribe a U.S. official to suppress a report linking him to alleged terrorist connections.

While Daniels has previously called for his removal, a U.S.-based Nigerian group has pushed back, criticising her comments as lacking proper context.

Burkina Faso Nationalizes Largest Cotton Company To Secure Textile Industry

The government of Burkina Faso has announced that it will be nationalizing the country’s largest cotton manufacturer, Société Burkinabè des Fibres Textiles (SOFITEX), in a move to boost Burkina Faso’s textile industry. The announcement, made on April 16, 2026, by the country’s Council of Ministers, comes on the heels of years of operational stagnation for SOFITEX, stagnation which has hurt the living standards of Burkinabé cotton farmers – those who actually produce the value. The government hopes to change this status quo by assuming full ownership of the company.

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso has taken bold steps to reassert its sovereignty and harness its natural wealth for the betterment of its people. Along with its fellow Alliance of Sahel States (AES) members, Mali and Niger, it has continued to record economic and political wins in the face of relentless attacks by Western-backed terrorists, economic isolation and sovereignty violations by Western-aligned African states, and endless slander from Western and Western-aligned media.

Isn't it funny how what was once the 2nd poorest country in the world now has the money to build housing and infrastructure for its people after getting rid of French colonisation and reclaiming its sovereignty?

And it built all this without needing a single NGO.

Funny right?

Niger To Provide 1000 Affordable Housing Units To Citizens, Near Completing First Batch

The Nigerien government is set to deliver 1000 affordable housing units to the people of Niger as part of its Cité de la Refondation (“City of Refoundation”) social housing initiative, launched in 2024 by the administration of Nigerien President Abdourahmane Tchiani. As of April 10, 2026, the first batch of 400 homes is near completion. The Cité de la Refondation initiative comes amid many bold steps forward for the once economically and politically stagnant West African nation, since it severed ties with former colonizer France in 2023.

As a member of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Niger has faced relentless attacks by Western-backed terrorists, economic isolation and sovereignty violations by Western-aligned African states, and endless slander from Western and Western-aligned media. Despite these externally-imposed challenges, the country and its fellow AES members, Mali and Burkina Faso, have continued to record economic and political wins.

All 3 nations have pointed to France as a key sponsor of terror in the Sahel – a claim which has been corroborated by their international allies – and France itself, along with its fellow Western nations, has made no bones about its intentions to revive its dwindling influence in Africa, and in so doing, shore up its own presently crumbling economy.

Recall that on March 11, 2026, the European Parliament called for the release of French-backed former Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, who was detained in 2023 by the Tchiani administration for his crimes against the Nigerien people.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken note of reports that the Tinubu administration is proceeding with plans to reintegrate hundreds of so-called repentant terrorists into society.

Taken together with a pattern of official remarks over time describing such individuals as “brothers” and even “prodigal sons,” this decision points to a deeper and more troubling reality: a government that does not fully grasp the nature or scale of the threat it faces.

Terrorism is not a family dispute. It is not a moral metaphor. It is a sustained and organised campaign of violence against the Nigerian state and its people. It has taken lives, destroyed communities, displaced millions, and undermined the very foundation of security and economic stability in our country. To respond to such a threat with language that softens its meaning, and policies that appear to prioritise rehabilitation ahead of accountability, is not compassion. It is weakness.

What Nigerians are witnessing is not a coherent security strategy. It is, at best, confusion dressed up as policy; at worst, a dangerous policy of political appeasement that compounds the tragedy of victims of terror.

On one hand, the government claims to be prosecuting a war against terror. On the other, it appears eager to reintroduce insurgents, who have waged a war against the Nigerian state, into society without first establishing clear processes for justice, without transparent standards for determining genuine repentance, and without credible safeguards to protect the communities they are being returned to. This is not balance. It is a dangerous failure of judgment and political accommodation taken too far.

A government that treats terrorists as errant family members is a government that is dangerously soft on terror. And a government that cannot take a clear stand against its enemy cannot defeat it. Reintegration without justice is not reconciliation; it is injustice. It is facilitation. It sends the wrong signal to victims who are still waiting for closure, and even worse, it is a signal to those who may be considering violence that the cost of terror can be negotiated after the fact.

The Tinubu administration has failed to answer the most basic questions that any serious government must confront in a matter of this magnitude. Nigerians do not know who has been investigated, who has been prosecuted, or on what basis individuals are deemed safe for reintegration. There is no clarity on the systems that will monitor them after release, and no assurance that affected communities have been consulted or protected. In the absence of these answers, what is being presented as a strategy begins to look like abdication, if not collaboration.

The ADC believes that terrorism must be treated as what it is: an existential threat to the Nigerian state. Our approach will be rooted in clarity, accountability, and competence. Those who have committed grave crimes will face the full weight of the law, because justice is not optional in a society governed by laws.

Above all, the safety of Nigerian communities will come first, and the voices and rights of victims will be central to any national response.

Nigeria cannot afford mixed signals in a fight that demands discipline and resolve. National security is not a guessing game, and it is not a space for sentiment to override judgment. It requires leadership that understands the stakes and is prepared to act with firmness and clarity.

Democracy is the only system that can produce someone like Tinubu as president. No other system can. If Tinubu hailed from China, Russia, Iran or North Korea, for instance, he would be the last person to hold any leadership position, let alone the number 1 job.

This is something for democracy promoters to think about.

“The issue of tribe and religion is something people need to stop in politics because, in this country, no tribe or religion buys bread cheaper than others, everybody is suffering.
People who bring tribe into politics are often those who are not qualified. So, when you ask them about their qualifications and competence, they introduce tribe or religion as a means of getting to where they shouldn’t be.”
