Honoured and humbled to be nominated for the 2026 BERA Equality in Education Award.
A reminder that #metacognition, learner agency and high expectations can be powerful tools for promoting equity & changing lives.
Thank you for the nomination. 🙏🏽 @BERANews@BERJ_Editors
Honoured and privileged to have written a blog on: Closing the gap through metacognitive teaching at East London Research School. See link below:

Privileged students often inherit metacognitive habits:
“How did you solve that?”
“Explain your thinking.”
“What strategy worked best?”
Other students never hear those conversations.
Schools reward #metacognition constantly, while rarely teaching it explicitly. #equity
Educational myth:
“If they tried harder, they’d succeed.”
Many disadvantaged students ARE trying hard.
What they often lack is:
• study strategy
• self-monitoring
• planning systems
• feedback
Effort without strategy exhausts students.
#Metacognition bridges that gap.
The attainment gap is not only about resources.
It is also about access to:
- confidence
- learning strategies
- reflective habits
That’s why #metacognition matters.
Metacognitive Teaching publishes 4 June.

Really good blog by @joel120193 on etymology as a tool for learning complex scientific vocabulary in science lessons (not just a one-off photosynthesis filler/explainer).

There is often a misconception that #metacognition is only for older pupils- secondary plus.
However, children as young as three or four often display strong metacognitive skills at this stage, which tend to decline as they journey into formal education.
This article, sheds light on how to start developing the language of metacognition in EYFS. https://t.co/jfPNfDgizh
Have you read Think! Metacognition-powered Primary Teaching (applicable across all key stages) yet?
If you have, what did you think?
It would be great to get your feedback on how you’ve used it or how you're going to use it whether in the classroom or across the whole school.
If you have a few minutes, a quick Amazon review would be amazing too!
