APC Presidential Candidate Addresses the Nation on the Implementation of the Cross-Party Agreement for National Unity
In a national address, Dr. Samura Matthew Wilson Kamara, presidential candidate of the All Peoples Congress (APC), provided an update on the implementation of the Cross-Party Agreement for National Unity. The agreement, signed by the APC and the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) government, aims to restore and strengthen democracy following the contentious June 24, 2023, multi-tier elections.
Dr. Kamara began by acknowledging the recent speech by President Bio on the same subject and extended greetings to the nation, particularly to those who recently celebrated Eid al-Adha and performed the Hajj. He emphasized the importance of truth, justice, peace, love, democracy, and honor in addressing the nation's challenges.
Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Dr. Kamara criticized the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) for the manner in which the election results were handled. He highlighted the lack of transparency in the announcement of results, which were not accompanied by the required Results Reconciliation Forms (RRFs). According to Dr. Kamara, this contributed to the APC's decision to not accept the results and withdraw from parliamentary and local council governance.
Dr. Kamara praised the timely intervention of the international community and the goodwill of the APC and Sierra Leoneans in reaching an Agreement for National Unity. This agreement includes provisions for reviewing election management, addressing political retribution, and promoting political tolerance. A Tripartite Committee, comprising representatives from the APC, SLPP, and the international community, was established to examine the irregularities in the 2023 and previous electoral cycles.
Despite progress, Dr. Kamara expressed frustration over the ECSL's refusal to submit disaggregated results at the polling station level, which has hindered the committee's work. He stressed that the Agreement for National Unity represents a crucial opportunity to end political divisions and emphasized the need for political leaders to prioritize governance, service delivery, and poverty elimination.
@samurakamara201 reiterated the importance of the Tripartite Committee's work, comparing it to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that helped heal the nation's wounds after the civil war. He acknowledged that while the committee may not address all political ills, it aims to ensure that the ambitions of a few do not override the will of the many.
Calling for peace and mutual respect, Dr. Kamara urged all Sierra Leoneans to refrain from using the committee's final report as a pretext for violence or political vilification. He emphasized that peace and justice are essential for sustainable democracy and called for appropriate sanctions on those responsible for electoral malpractices.
Dr. Kamara concluded by welcoming the international assessment mission led by Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia, and reaffirmed the APC's commitment to the Agreement for National Unity. He pledged to continue working towards electoral transparency, accountability, and justice for the people of #SierraLeone.
"Let us embrace the opportunities ahead and work collectively for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Sierra Leone," Dr. Kamara urged. "Together, we can ensure that our democratic processes reflect the true will of the people."
The address highlighted the ongoing efforts to address the challenges stemming from the 2023 elections. #saloneX @ecowas_cedeao@icpncsl@UN_UNOWAS
We ๐ช๐บ welcome the agreement of GoSL & APC to continue working together at the Tripartite Committee to present a final report with recommendations for electoral reform. We commend both parties for upholding dialogue, cooperation and national unity, and putting the country ๐ธ๐ฑfirst
Important clarification on the work of the Tripartite Committee from the government of #SierraLeone Representatives. We remain committed to the process that all sides agreed to and to the successful completion of the work of the committee. #SaloneAboveAllElse
Kindly tell this man that the 2012 elections were cleared by both local and international observers. Also, the results were done so transparently that Dr. Thorpe left them on the NEC website for everyone. Show us how you won the 2023 elections! @PresidentBio@USEmbFreetown
The worst genocide of our lifetime is happening right now. By massacring tens of thousands, injuring hundreds of thousands and beheading babies, what are you trying to achieve? Calling it a tragic mishap is pathetic! If anything, it's a sign that you've lost. Lost your humanity. Lost the plot. #AllEyesOnRafah
