Lecturer in Assistive Technology, University of Dundee. PhD in #eyegaze & cerebral palsy. Registered Clinical Scientist. Professional account, my views.
Inspired by the passion of @dundeeuni Educational Assistive Technology MSc students for improving lives of disabled people through their work. Extraordinary stories of impact through globally unique learning. Thanks to Annalu Waller and her great team.
[5/5] This paper discusses use of #AI in a clinical setting, concluding that utility and safety evaluations must consider the whole workflow, not just accuracy metrics in isolation. However human-AI inter-operation shows great promise for improving #cancer#radiotherapy workflows
[4/5] Blinded review showed gold standard clinician contours were not rated more highly than the AI-generated contours by independent reviewers. Crucially, when artificial errors were introduced into the system, clinical reviewers could spot these in the vast majority of cases.
[2/5] #Contouring in radiotherapy is the process of "drawing round" all the organs at risk adjacent to a tumour - the bits you don't want to "zap" with nasty radiation. Our study showed that #AI can be used to do this faster than clinicians alone, who then review the contours.

We hope that this paper will contribute to this important and ongoing discussion in the fields of #AAC#AugComm and #AssistiveTechnology - there is huge potential here but the field must be careful about implementation.
Paper reports on a consultation at @Comm_Matters conference 2023 on the use, risks, benefits and ethics of integrating AI into #AAC#AugComm systems - opportunities for rate enhancement & novel utterance generation should be balanced against risks of bias, ownership & authorship
