At a recent Global Policy Dialogue, David Brandon Smith (Goethe University Frankfurt) presented his research on Namibia’s independence struggle (1946–1990).

Using the concept of pluralistic diplomacy, he highlighted how non-state actors—especially churches—shaped political and diplomatic processes.

Lutheran and Catholic institutions acted as key mediators, mobilizers, and spaces for resistance during the independence movement.

On 16 Jul 1978, President Carter joined the 20th anniv service of Bonn’s Stimson Memorial Chapel. As shown in the church’s guest book (shared with permission), he was joined by First Lady Rosalynn and their daughter, Amy, who had a bit of fun when she signed! RIP.
