Audience Q: How do I turn things around for a horse that had a terrible first trailer-loading experience? Grandin: Change of location can help. Helps open a new file folder. #AAEP2025
Audience Q for Grandin: Can you conduct a study to prove where to put the drain in a wash stall for horses? People put them in the middle, which can scare the horse. Ideally, put them in the back. Grandin: Whatever you do the floor needs to look uniform/the same. #AAEP2025
Grandin: Calm animals are easier to handle, and it takes them 20-30 minutes to calm down. Things like slipping cause fear in animals. Consider nonslip footing, and keep an eye on its wear. #AAEP2025
Dr. Grandin: We need different types of thinkers (visual, auditory, etc., and combinations of these in individuals). They complement one another in looking at a problem from different perspectives. #AAEP2025
Listening to Dr. Temple Grandin speak is always a privilege. So many nuggets of wisdom to take to the barn. Unsurprising that it's standing-room only like I've never seen at the convention. #aaep2025
I enjoyed catching up with Dr. David Levine of @newboltoncenter and Dr. Holly Helbig @zoetisequine about biomarkers, particularly serum amyloid A (SAA). Have a listen here or find Equine Innovators wherever you listen to podcasts.
It's been a minute since I posted on X, and it's not lost on me that the most recent thing I posted about was EHV-1 in horses. Conversations about this disease are always relevant, as is this resource. https://t.co/DcgEYo9PTI
This is a piece every horse owner needs to read. The topic of #EHV1 is especially important if you have horses shipping onto and off the farm (even if it's not your own horse coming and going).

Back in April I spoke with Dr. Scott Stanley of the @UKGluckCenter about drug testing in horse racing and competition. He did a great job of explaining how conventional testing works and described a biomarker-based out-of-competition testing method he and his team are developing.
Hubbell during the Q&A: Using a twitch and raising the horse's head is one way to reduce "the lightness in their hind end" during standing procedures. #AAEP2020
Hubbell's final points: 1 - Anesthesia recovery remains problematic. 2 - Recovery needs to be safer for both humans and horses. 3 - A series of retrospective studies will not lead us to a solution; what we need is a research program focused on the solution. #AAEP2020
On the call-for-research front, Hubbell said he has decided to put his money where his mouth is and has donated his Milne honorarium to @AAEPHorseDocs Foundation for the Horse, and @roodandriddle is matching it. #AAEP2020
