If you havent read this paper by @Peter_Stilwell @Anne_Hudon@keith_meldrum@MGabriellePage and @TH_Wideman go and read it now. It's wonderfully writted and will support you to question an area of pain care rarely discussed because of taboo: Suffering.

@carlosgeversdc@keith_meldrum@Virginia_McI Great questions! I think of despair (absence of hope) has having important overlap with suffering. As for a polarity for suffering, Joy comes to mind. Though, I think it’s possible to experience both in reasonably close approximation… Susan Cain's Bittersweet gets at this idea
@keith_meldrum Thanks for this @keith_meldrum ! I love this concept of engaging and working “with” or alongside your suffering. Also, so helpful to have loved ones to share this with #canadianpainlive
A5: Finding ways to, even briefly, catch your breath & moments of peace. Finding (new) ways to cultivate hope, meaning & purpose in life, despite pain. Findings ways to see yourself as being valued, accepted & loved, despite the suffering you experience #noteasy#CanadianPainlive
@Virginia_McI Thanks @Virginia_McI ! I’d also argue that it saves time in the longer run – likely setting up a treatment plan that actually aligns with what’s most important for the patient #canadianpainlive
A4: Building trust, communicating empathy, showing compassion = a vital foundation. Also, open questions to explore how pain has disrupted their life, while recognizing signs that pain + suffering might be presently overwhelming their capacity to talk about this #CanadianPainlive
