Der Zweite Weltkrieg ist ein Buch voller Leidensgeschichten. Manche davon werden oft erzählt und manche selten und immer seltener.

An das Schicksal der 14 Millionen Deutschen, die am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges aus ihrer Heimat vertrieben worden sind, wird kaum noch erinnert. Zwei Millionen von ihnen, so schätzt man, sind dabei ums Leben gekommen oder umgebracht worden.

1950 lebten in den beiden deutschen Staaten BRD und DDR zusammen rund zwölf Millionen Heimatvertriebene. Im Westen hielten sie die Erinnerung an ihre Heimat lange Zeit aufrecht und hatten auch im politischen Diskurs eine Stimme, mit der sie die Illusion aufrecht erhielten, es könne irgendeine Art von Zurück geben.

Seit die Zeitzeugen so gut wie ausgestorben sind, ist auch diese Stimme verstummt. Hinzu kommt heute die allgegenwärtige Angst, daß die Erinnerung an die Vertreibung „den Rechten in die Hände spielt“. Davon sollte man sich nicht einschüchtern lassen, sondern beharrlich auch diese Leidensgeschichte immer wieder erzählen.
