It's expensive for two reasons. The first is that there are a lot of regulatory burdens, and a lot of them don't even make any sense. We overpay for everything, sometimes by a factor of 10, because parts have to be "qualified", even though in practice it doesn't make them any more reliable. And we've got completely ridiculous physical security requirements that were put in at the height of post-911 paranoia.
The second is because we aren't building them at scale. If we had kept building nuclear plants instead of completely stopping decades ago, we would have more standardized designs and modern parts being produced at better economic scale. Instead we've got 40+ year old plants using old technology that is expensive to maintain but also expensive to upgrade because you're retrofitting new stuff into an old plant.
Space launch was a clear case where there was a large difference in efficiency between what was possible and what was done in practice before SpaceX. A large part of that was due to everything being locked in to what (just barely) already worked, with huge risk aversion. WIth national prestige or a half billion dollar geosync satellite on the line, speculative engineering ideas that might result in a public debacle were not welcome.
When failure is not an option, success can stay very expensive. You need to experiment to improve, and that fundamentally means being comfortable with failure. If you know it is going to work, it isn’t an experiment.
I have long believed that nuclear power today is in precisely the same state as space launch two decades ago, but the even more pressing question now is if semiconductor fabrication might also be.
On the one hand, Moore’s Law has been a sequence of heroic miracles of technology at the wafer fabrication level, grinding out hundreds of compounding small improvements.
On the other hand, fabs are “too big to fail”, and there are elements of extreme conservatism at play. Intel’s “Copy exactly!” fab development exemplifies that mindset – instead of every new building being an opportunity to explore and optimize processes, it was deemed more valuable to just replicate.
While each individual machine may be straining against physical limits of technology, it is possible that the systems orchestrating them all together could be far from optimal.
The explore / exploit axis is fundamental to all decision making, but human risk avoidance probably biases away from optimal exploration.

The corporate advisory boards that I have been a part of have almost exclusively been “vibe checks”, where presentations are made about work the company is doing, and the advisory panel chats about things for a while.
This seems like a poor way to utilize the advisors.
Maybe it is worth it just for a rare outburst of “What? No! Are you insane?” But if the company executives don’t actually do something differently than what they were already planning, then the advisory board was actually wasted.
The right time to use advisors is when there is an open and contentious question, and you want an opinion from an unbiased expert. You probably don’t want to convene a “board of advisors”, but rather draw from a “pool of advisors” according to their skillsets.
I know there is some overlap between open source and anti-AI activists, but I have a hard time reconciling it. My million+ open source LOC were always intended as a gift to the world. Yes, I would make arguments about how it would strengthen our communities, and the GPL would prevent outright exploitation by our competitors, but those were to allay fears of my partners to allow me to make the gift.
AI training on the code magnifies the value of the gift. I am enthusiastic about it!
Some people do look at open source as a tool for social change, career advancement, or reputation building, but those are all downstream of the gift.
