Adults who grew up in unsafe or emotionally invalidating homes are primed to see danger & feel fear. This kept them safe as children. Now, as adults, they need help to re-train their #brainstem so they can feel safe & thrive. They need attuned systems & #relationships to heal
How can we, as professionals & services, hold the idea that traumatised children often become parents with Complex PTSD, who need the same co-regulation, empathy & bottom up approach as they did when they were young? #trauma
Many of you will have heard me talk about this hug I had with Stephen Porges; the 20 second hug that releases oxytocin. We are in a moment of time where many of us are without hugs. This is impacting us in many ways including how we feel belonging, resonance & connection #bekind
Really excellent seminar with @Academyjustice last night on #ACE#Trauma#resilience and #ACEenquiry. 200+ professionals from across sectors and so many thoughtful questions. Looking forward to the second one on Monday 3rd August. Prevention rather than cure has to be the goal!
Great multi - agency workshops today @VR_Network funded workshops focusing on ACEs and Trauma- Informed Practice. Thanks to all who attended and Rob for today's sessions @warren_larkin
There has been a lot of debate about ACE enquiry recently, so I thought I would write a short blog sharing my perspective. 'ACE enquiry - What it is, what it isn't and why it's important.' #ACE#Trauma#traumainformed#assessment#resilience#recovery

"The idea that our genes are 'set in stone' has been disproven. Nature vs Nurture is no longer a debate!" Very interesting read. Dr Rachel Yehuda (a speaker at one of our upcoming Action Trauma events) explores this as well. https://t.co/HIzZXj2JA7
Niven’s presentation was invaluable and the good news is that you can view it too by following the link below.... I’ll be watching it again! 😊Thanks @DirectorVRU
Positive day with Exec Director of Community Ints, discussing TTG & accommodation with my Notts managers and then with the impressive TTG team at HMP Notts. Thanks for your time and info, Ian!
Mental illness mostly caused by life events not genetics, argue psychologists - Yet the MRC still spends most of its funding on things like brain scanners and gene sequencing studies. Please redress the balance and ask, what happened to this person? https://t.co/rup7yGnXXg
@BorisJohnson @patel4witham More prisons & stop & search powers wont fix crime & violence. More Police? 🤔 At least they understand that the problem is a social one. They’re the front line in helping vulnerable people. Crime is a SYMPTOM. Address social adversity & poverty!
I just read through the proof of an article I wrote called "Towards ACE-Aware, trauma responsive penal policy and practice" which will be in the Sept issue of the Prison Service Journal. I'm quite pleased w it. I'll share it once it's published.
How Norway turns criminals into good neighbours - BBC News. This works to reduce recidivism to 20%. In England it is 50%. It costs more up front but a massive ROI in the short to medium term @patel4witham https://t.co/iePbVI1Q6L
Who are the YP in custody?
39% have been in LA care; 19% have a disability, 50% have literacy/numeracy difficulties & 25% of kids in custody for <12 months have experienced permanent exclusion.
It’s almost like we need a joined up holistic approach, eh?
