On this day in 1972, Richard Nixon arrived in China in one of the most consequential diplomatic visits of the 20th century.

The trip reshaped global geopolitics, opened relations between Washington and Beijing, and changed the balance of the Cold War.

Every US President since — except Jimmy Carter and Joe Biden — has visited China.

More than 50 years later, America is still grappling with the consequences of Nixon’s opening to Beijing.
