Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.
My cardinal sin of songwriting is rhyming a word with itself.
20 years later and I'm still irrationally upset by
"I could have another you in a minute
Matter fact he'll be here in a minute"
Easily the favorite movie I've watched this year. THE NORTHMAN felt "dug up" rather than created, which is my favorite feeling upon encountering a truly staggering piece of art
Why was PREDATOR: BADLANDS a warm and completely charming movie about toxic masculinity and friendship? I am not a Predator person at all, but this so surprisingly delightful
1. Yes, ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is exactly as good as everyone said it was. I still think THERE WILL BE BLOOD will always be my favorite PTA, but ONE BATTLE makes a case for being the better film
Now that the weather's nice, I'm getting outside more, but I've done a lot of treadmill running this winter/spring, which has meant finally catching up on so many movies and shows as God intended—on my tiny phone screen. Stay tuned for some high-and-low lights!
Books I regularly reread, and love more every time
1. Station Eleven
2. The Road (though not since the Vanity Fair article)
3. Lord of the Rings
End of List
Finally got around to BOYHOOD, which startlingly felt more like life than a movie. All of Linklater's indulgences seem to have found their fullest, ideal forms. Pretty amazing stuff!
As someone with no experience in theater but very strong opinions, I think “Leave Britney Alone” would be the ultimate audition monologue. If you can nail that, you've got the part
Well, uh, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is awesome. Viking Hel and a thoughtful depiction of psychosis? A beautiful and terrifying piece of video game art
Once again calling on the Olympics Committee to adopt my wife's million-dollar idea: an untrained 45 year old named Dave competing as a point of reference in each event
Super excited to have received the following book mail today, from Ryan Rickrode. A great essay collection, and he's got a novel coming out with @UnsolicitedP this April. And hey, would you look at that—my first blurb!
Somehow, I've managed to write 45,000 words this month.
Kidding, I know exactly how: a little bit every day, and only trying to make a few of them any good. That's what second drafts are for.
Onward!
