TRIGGER WARNING: reality check for gamers. If you are ever going to take the time to read a tweet of mine, this would be the one.

In 2018, Dr. Hamed Aliyari published research examining both the beneficial and harmful effects of computer game stress on cognitive functions of players. There are two key findings to this research I want to focus on.

1. He found that excitatory video games (e.g. games like Valorant and Fortnite) stimulate a significant increase in cortisol, causing an interactive stress response. The resulting physiological damage is "demonstrated in the form of unwanted angry and violent behavior and depression and a decrease in the cognitive readiness of the individual"

In other words, whether you perceive it or not, you are experiencing a physiological stress response just by playing games like Valorant or Fortnite. If you play video games often and this stress response is chronic, you will likely begin to tilt faster and experience a decline in reaction time.

2. He established a distinction between acute and chronic stress response caused by this increase in cortisol concentration, finding "chronic stress leads to mental dysfunction, whereas the acute stress reinforces mental abilities such as attention, processing speed, and the decision-making power (Davis & Granger, 2009; Maheu et al., 2005). Moreover, the effects of stress on the cognitive performance of humans depend on the effective dose of cortisol (LaBar & Cabeza, 2006; Pham, & Tran, 2012; Ramirez & Vamvakousis, 2012)."

Looking at the big picture, we now know that excitatory games increase cortisol. In the short term, that is amazing, allowing us to function at peak mental capacity. On the other hand, in the long term, a high cortisol concentration drastically decreases performance in ALL aspects. In my mind, if you truly want to "optimize" your performance, you must establish a low baseline cortisol level and look to only spike it when it's time to compete. That is where my NEURO and FLOWSTATE formulas come into play: NEURO establishes the lower baseline and FLOWSTATE stimulates the spike. It's not rocket science, just neuroscience :P
