Whether you’re a legal colleague, leader, or friend, you don’t need to be a mental health expert to make a difference. Start by using compassionate, non-stigmatizing language— you can say “died by suicide” instead of more harmful phrases.

Loneliness, over-commitment, and prior mental health diagnoses were identified as key risk factors in suicidal thoughts in lawyers. (Source: ABA Profile of the Legal Profession 2023).

The legal profession continues to face serious mental health challenges, but growing awareness is paving the way for change. A 2023 national study conducted by the ABA and the University of Minnesota revealed that 8.5% of lawyers had experienced recent suicidal thoughts.
