This past Sunday, Arbel Monnickendam and his family came to sift soil from the Temple Mount, and they found a fragment of a clay sealings from the First Temple period. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Dr. Gabriel Barkay z”l, co-founder and director of the Temple Mount Sifting Project.
Among the last of a generation of giants in biblical archaeology, his immense knowledge illuminated and inspired countless people. A prolific scholar and beloved teacher, he helped uncover Jerusalem’s hidden treasures. He raised generations of students and shared his love of Jerusalem with many, in Israel and throughout the world.

אחד הידועים שבפיוטי יום הכיפורים במסורת האשכנזית הוא „כי הנה כחומר”. לא ידוע מיהו מחברו, והוא נשען על דברי ה' בפי ירמיהו הנביא: "הִנֵּה כַחֹמֶר בְּיַד הַיּוֹצֵר כֵּן אַתֶּם בְּיָדִי בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל" (ירמיהו יח: ו). הפיוט מדמה את היחס בין הקב״ה לישראל ליחס בין אומן לחומר שבידו. כל בית בפיוט מציג בעל מלאכה אחר — יוצר, מסַתֵּת, חרש, מלח, מזגג, רוקם וצורף — ומשמש דימוי לעיצוב, לזיקוק ולהכוונה של הנפש. דימויים אלה מדברים לא רק על הבריאה האלוהית אלא גם על ההנהגה האלוהית שמעצבת את חיינו מדי שנה בשנה.
בפרויקט סינון העפר מהר הבית מקבלים הדימויים הללו ממשות. עפר הר הבית הניב אלפי ממצאים המשקפים את אותן מלאכות המתוארות בפיוט. כל פריט שנחשף בסינון מספר גם על המלאכה הקדומה שהביאה ליצירתו, ורבות מהן מתוארות בפיוט.

Like Clay – Yom Kippur Reflections from the Temple Mount Sifting Project
This Yom Kippur, as we reflect on our own shaping, we also honor the hands that formed the sacred and mundane objects of Jerusalem’s past. Jewish prayer books contain many liturgical poems (piyyutim), especially in the holiday services. One well-known example from the Yom Kippur prayers is “כי הנה כחומר” (Ki Hineh Ka-ḥomer, “Like Clay”). It likens the relationship between God and Israel to that of an artisan and the material in his hands. Each stanza invokes a different craft – potter, mason, smith, glazier, embroiderer, refiner – offering metaphors of shaping, refining, and guidance. These images speak not only to divine creation but also to the human experience of labor, craftsmanship, and transformation.

At the Temple Mount Sifting Project, these metaphors come to life. The soil of the Temple Mount has yielded thousands of artifacts that reflect the very crafts described in the piyyut. Each verse of the piyyut reminds us that we are shaped – like clay, stone, iron, glass, and silver – by forces greater than ourselves. And each artifact uncovered by the Sifting Project reminds us that the Temple Mount was not only a place of prayer, but also of labor, artistry, and life.
