Preparing students for postsecondary success begins long before high school graduation.
This year, 39.2% of Tennessee seventh graders met expectations in math. While this reflects modest progress, Tennessee is not yet on pace to reach the TN2030 goal of 58% proficiency.
Middle school math is a critical milestone that prepares students for rigorous coursework in high school, postsecondary education, and high-demand careers. Significant work remains to ensure more students build the strong math foundation needed for long-term success and a life of economic independence.

Tennessee’s latest TCAP data show encouraging progress in key areas while also underscoring the work that remains to ensure every student is prepared for what comes next.
📖 Tennessee third graders made meaningful progress toward our TN2030 goal of 71% proficiency in English language arts. In 2026, 44.9% of third graders were proficient in ELA — an increase of 3.2 percentage points from last year and the largest year-over-year gain in recent years.
📈 In seventh-grade math, 39.2% of students met expectations, reflecting modest improvement toward our TN2030 goal of 58% proficiency. While this growth represents roughly 400 additional students meeting expectations, Tennessee is not yet on pace to achieve the proficiency goals envisioned through TN2030.
The progress is worth celebrating but continued action is essential. If persistent gaps in student achievement go unaddressed, it could have lasting implications for students’ educational opportunities, long-term success, and ability to achieve economic independence.
Join #TN2030 as we continue building pathways that prepare every Tennessee student for what’s next.

Tennessee’s future depends on the pathways we build today.
The 2026 Future Forward Summit highlighted a critical challenge: while most students say career planning matters, many still face disconnected systems and unclear paths from education to career.
To change that, we must strengthen connections across K-12, higher education, employers, and workforce systems — ensuring every Tennessee student can access a high-quality pathway to economic mobility.
Through #TN2030, Tennessee is working toward ambitious goals to increase postsecondary enrollment and completion while expanding access to high-value credentials aligned to workforce needs.
