Almost 1200 people died on the Mississippi River when the steamboat Sultana exploded north of Memphis.
Most Americans forgot. But the survivors never did.
This monument was erected by men who lived through the disaster and refused to allow those who died to be forgotten
Most Americans have heard of the Titanic. Far fewer have heard of the Sultana. But even with the deaths revised at 1,169, the Sultana disaster is still the deadliest maritime disaster in United States history. Hear about it in our next episode!

I recently sat down with an excellent author and someone I consider a friend @TomMcMillan63 author of my favorite Gettysburg book about the rebels from Gettysburg and he gave me a look into one of his favorite locations. A field that means so much to many people can also mean love and for Tom, well, it’s a love for a woman.

Born on this day in 1947, Tom Clancy came to define the modern techno-thriller. I read THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER soon after its publication and have many fond memories escaping into the pages of each new Clancy novel over the ensuing years. I remember exactly where I was as I cracked their covers. I already had my sights set on the SEAL Teams when John Clark first appeared in THE CARDINAL OF THE KREMLIN. When WITHOUT REMORSE hit shelves, I immediately immersed myself in the origin story of the former Navy SEAL and CIA legend. That book in particular remains an old friend.
Do you have a favorite Tom Clancy novel?
Am I the only one who finds it disappointing and exhausting how many pages that started as content creation, of some kind, are becoming more political in both comments and posts?
I find myself unfollowing many accounts that have succumbed to this.
My page remains politics free for professional reasons but also because it is unhealthy to consume political commentary, constantly.
We just crossed 8,200 followers and 1M+ views on Facebook.

@history_dame Agreed, @History_Dame. Trying to keep The Tennessee History Nerd political commentary free also. Not politics free—much of history content includes politics. But just the facts—trying to avoid the political commentary.
We’re live.

As part of Camp Forrest, the Army carried out armored warfare testing in the area. The results helped refine how tanks and armored units would be used during the war.
