La Medalla de San Benito es uno de los sacramentales más conocidos de la Iglesia y está llena de historia, simbolismo y tradición. Descubre estos 7 datos sobre ella:

1️⃣ Su origen es incierto
En el siglo XVII, durante un juicio de brujería en Alemania, se descubrieron cruces con inscripciones en la Abadía de Metten. Más tarde apareció un pergamino con la imagen de San Benito y las frases completas que dieron origen a las abreviaturas de la medalla.

2️⃣ Con ella se puede obtener indulgencia plenaria
La medalla actual corresponde al Jubileo de 1880. La Iglesia concede indulgencia plenaria en la fiesta de San Benito (11 de julio), cumpliendo las condiciones habituales.

3️⃣ La señal de la cruz protegía a San Benito
La tradición cuenta que, al hacer la señal de la cruz, un vaso con veneno se rompió. También venció diversas tentaciones confiando plenamente en Dios.

4️⃣ Es un sacramental de la Iglesia
La Medalla de San Benito es reconocida como un sacramental que dispone a los fieles a recibir la gracia de Dios y fortalecer su vida espiritual.

5️⃣ Cada símbolo tiene un significado
En la medalla aparecen San Benito, la cruz, una copa, un cuervo y varias inscripciones que recuerdan momentos de su vida y expresan una oración de protección.

6️⃣ Las siglas y su significado
Las famosas iniciales del reverso resumen una antigua invocación que proclama la victoria de Cristo y rechaza el mal.

7️⃣ Debe ser bendecida
La Iglesia recomienda que la medalla sea bendecida por un sacerdote mediante la oración especial antes de ser usada.

Known as the "devil-chasing medal," the St. Benedict Medal is one of the most powerful sacramentals in the Catholic Church. Its power comes not from the object itself, but from Christ, who works through the faith of the one who uses it.

The Front:

St. Benedict holds a cross. At his side are a broken cup—after monks tried to poison him, it shattered when he blessed it—and a raven carrying away a poisoned loaf, another failed attempt on his life. Around the edge is the inscription:

Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur

"May we be strengthened by his presence in our hour of death."

The Back:

A large cross bears the initials of the famous prayer:

C.S.P.B. – Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti
"The Cross of our Holy Father Benedict."
C.S.S.M.L. – Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux
"May the Holy Cross be my light."

N.D.S.M.D. – Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux
"May the dragon not be my guide."
Around the border is the exorcism prayer:

At the bottom is a single word:

PAX — Peace.
The medal was formally approved by Pope Benedict XIV in 1742. It became widely known after the miraculous healing of a young man named Brunone, who later entered the Benedictine Order and eventually became Pope St. Leo IX.
