Many of the greatest public health wins came about in large part because community groups advocated tirelessly for a healthier future.

That includes things that have saved countless lives, like:

Good health doesn’t just happen. Communities create it, together.

A big part of our job is fostering partnerships across Pierce County.

That’s why, for example, we facilitate monthly meetings with community leaders in our Communities of Focus. We learn, share, and grow together, and foster partnerships to help make sure people have a fair chance to be healthy no matter the zip code.

The meetings have led to things like:

🖊️ Grant-writing workshops that help partners fund their crucial work.

🗺️ An interactive map that helps people find nearby food resources.

👨🏽👩🏻 Funding for more community health workers.

Did you know one of public health’s giants had close ties to Pierce County?

Dr. William H. Foege went to undergrad at Pacific Lutheran University before leading the work that eradicated smallpox worldwide in 1980. How big a deal is that? Smallpox killed about 300 million people in the 20th century alone.

Dr. Foege died earlier this year at age 89, after a career in which he led Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and, later, founded the Task Force for Global Health.

"Public health might be the greatest measure of kindness, the greatest measure of how to treat each other,” he once said.

So today we say thank you to scientists like Dr. Foege who improve health and happiness around the world every day!
