School librarians are community builders, innovators, collaborators, and so much more - including one of the best resources a student can have as they navigate the new school year: https://t.co/bHBo825QAL #BackToSchool
The spectrum of belief and perspective about AI in education may present as a straight line.
Optimism ———— Concern
The reality is that due to the jagged and unpredictable nature of text generative AI, this straight line is more like a circle with Optimism and Concern landing right next to each other.
The moment you find a powerful use case via a curious and logical prompt, there is an equally valid concern about the potential negative impact on student learning. AI as a thought partner to enhance student and teacher thinking is countered with a concern that students may lose faith in their own ability to solve complex problems.
This an exceptionally challenging scenario for education as a whole to navigate. Distilling AI to either side of the spectrum won’t allow us to carefully and collectively move forward.
Optimism & Concern defines the current state of AI in education. This is definitely not a time for either / or and taking a firm position, It’s too early for that.
If you are leaning towards optimism, consider balancing it with a dose of skepticism and recognize that much of the concern is driven by educators who truly care about their students.
If you find yourself landing closer to skepticism, explore an AI tool, experiment with prompting and consider asking yourself, “What problem exists in my classroom, school or district that could be solved with AI?”
2024 AI in education is more like a circle…

AI is a huge shift.
I give a lot of credit to how hard schools are working to stay ahead of it, to keep their teachers informed, to create the best possible experiences for their students.
I see the educators who are present, ready to learn, many unsure of what it all means for them, and for education as a whole. Truly, I think that's where most people are. It's hard to know for sure where it will all take us.
But we will persist, continue to learn, acknowledging the discomfort paired with the optimism and excitement that can come with a shift of this magnitude.
My promise to every educator who joins me for professional learning on AI is that I will pour every bit of effort, time, information, consideration and perspective that I possibly can into what I'm delivering to you.
That holds true if I am booked in your school with you, or if you join me for The Empowered Educator this summer. You will get everything I have to give.
To those who have already started their work on AI with me, I hope you have experienced this, as well.
Thank you all for trusting me.

@gregkulowiec It was so great having you join us. I know many of our teachers appreciated the balanced approach that your sessions provided. It has allowed us to continue the conversations about both the benefits and the dilemmas.
Got this book recommendation at a CES Council last week and can’t put it down. Thinking a lot about the concept of overprotection in the real world and underprotection in the virtual world.
"If educators can reclaim their time by using generative AI to do the mundane tasks, they can get back to doing some of the fun stuff that made them get into teaching."

Two roadblocks often get in the way of tech-enhanced deep learning:
1. Emphasizing the digital tools rather than student learning
2. Aiming for lower-level student learning outcomes
Here's how to avoid those pitfalls: https://t.co/3VcP79tjQl

Introducing generative #AI tools into the classroom can be a big step for any educator. That’s why it’s important to know how to approach AI tools responsibly.

To prepare for an AI-powered future, lets help kids understand where and how it influences their lives. Class discussions about what AI is and isn't can help lay the groundwork for this inquiry at any age.

As educators have searched for alternatives to assigning essays in the wake of #ChatGPT, some are bringing back oral exams.
Can oral exams be delivered at the scale needed for today’s class sizes?
This @EdSurge article answers that question: https://t.co/xr3wH7qMva
