The EU’s “Security Action for Europe” (#SAFE) loan agreement was signed during a formal ceremony.🛡️🇪🇺🇱🇻
It secures €3.5 billion for Latvia to boost defence and security capabilities, with the first €525 million arriving within weeks.
The funds will immediately strengthen the combat readiness, firepower, and mobility of our National Armed Forces.
The signing ceremony was attended by PM @AndrisKulbergs, EU Commissioner @KubiliusA, Defence Minister Raivis Melnis, and Finance Minister @MarisKucinskis.
A pleasure to welcome Prime Minister @AndrisKulbergs to Brussels ahead of his first #EUCO later today.
Latvia can count on the EU’s full support and solidarity as it deals with the immediate threats on the EU’s Eastern Flank. Latvia’s security is Europe’s security.
Over the next two days, Leaders will have on their agenda Ukraine and Europe’s security and defence.
Welcome to Brussels @AndrisKulbergs!
We are joining forces on an ambitious, much-needed European security & defence agenda.
We also had a good discussion ahead the EUCO, particularly on the MFF.
And we stressed the importance to advance on common 🇪🇺 projects like Rail Baltica.
🇱🇻 First phone call with Prime Minister @AndrisKulbergs.
Hybrid threats faced by the Baltic states are urgent.
So we got to work immediately.
We discussed Latvia’s €3.5 bn SAFE plan and its contribution to our European flagship defence projects.
Let’s sign it soon!
Latvia stands with full solidarity with Romania and wishes a swift recovery to those injured in Galați. 🇷🇴🇱🇻
We condemn Russian drones striking Romanians, at home, at night.
The aggressor Russia must be stopped through mighty sanctions and sustained help to Ukraine.
I want to praise the resilience of the Baltic people.
You have responded with calm and responsibility.
And with a clear message to Russia:
You will fail.

I’m in Vilnius to send a clear message:
Europe stands in full solidarity and unity with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
And we are stepping up our support.
Because when Baltic States are being tested, Europe as a whole is being tested.
Russia’s public threats against our Baltic States are completely unacceptable.
Let there be no doubt.
A threat against one Member State is a threat against our entire Union.
Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for drones endangering the lives and security of people on our Eastern flank.
Europe will respond with unity and strength.
We will continue reinforcing the security of our Eastern flank with strong collective defence and preparedness at every level.

22 years of Latvia 🇱🇻 in @NATO.
It’s 22 years of Latvia and our allies having each other’s back.
Latvia is contributing its part to the strongest defence alliance in the world.
We are strong. We are united. We are NATO.
Those responsible for the aggression against Ukraine must be held accountable.
Today, we have proposed that the EU become a founding member of the Special Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

Drones have crossed into the territories of all three Baltic States 🇱🇻🇪🇪🇱🇹
This is direct consequence of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine 🇺🇦
We remain calm and strengthen our preparedness 🛡️
Very useful meetings with Baltic Prime Ministers 🇪🇪 @KristenMichalPM 🇱🇻 @EvikaSilina and 🇱🇹 @IRuginiene, with a strong focus on Ukraine and Europe’s security and defence.
We also agree on the need to accelerate our competitiveness agenda - this will be the main focus of the next European Council meeting.
