Justin Fashanu’s decision to come out as gay in the late 1980s was a pivotal moment for me. It wasn’t just about his courage; it was about seeing someone who shared my background, my culture, and my struggles, standing up and saying, “This is who I am.” As a fellow British Nigerian, and around the same age, his story resonated deeply with me. He helped me to start understanding my own sexuality at a time when I was grappling with the fear of rejection and the internal conflict of trying to reconcile my identity with society’s expectations.

Fashanu’s openness was groundbreaking, yet it came with a heavy price. His tragic death was not only a loss to the Black LGBTQ+ community but also a stark reminder of the challenges and risks of being visible in a world that often fails to accept or understand us. It added another layer of trauma and fear to the process of coming out, as I struggled to navigate my own journey in a society that could be unforgiving and harsh.

Despite the pain, Justin Fashanu’s legacy remains powerful. He gave homosexuality a face within the Black community, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes at a time when very few dared to. Today and always, I honour him and thank him for his bravery and his sacrifice. His courage paved the way for many of us, and his story continues to inspire the fight for visibility, acceptance, and dignity for Black LGBTQ+ people worldwide.
