🇵🇾❤️ Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill deserves his moment.
In 2018, Gill was playing amateur football, chasing a dream that at times seemed impossible. Even as recently as last year, he was only the back-up goalkeeper at San Lorenzo de Almagro.
Now, the 26-year-old represents Paraguay at the World Cup as their No.1 - a remarkable rise for a player whose career has been built on resilience and sacrifice.
The road to the top was anything but straightforward. Standing nearly 2m (6ft 6in) tall, Gill struggled to earn the trust of clubs in his homeland, eventually leaving Paraguay for Argentina in 2024 in search of an opportunity. Off the pitch, life was even tougher. His family endured serious financial hardship, with his wife revealing after his international debut that Gill had sold some of his football equipment just to help put food on the table. At the same time, the couple's young son was fighting for his life, making every setback feel even heavier.
Fate finally intervened when San Lorenzo attempted to sign Keylor Navas but were unable to complete the deal because of financial difficulties. With no new goalkeeper arriving, manager Miguel Russo turned to Gill. He seized the opportunity with both hands, producing a string of impressive performances that earned him the club's No. 1 shirt - a position he has never relinquished.
His outstanding form led to a call-up for Paraguay, where he made his international debut in the nation's historic World Cup qualifying victory over Peru in Lima. For Gill and his family, it was the culmination of years of sacrifice, perseverance and unwavering belief. From selling his gear to survive to standing on football's biggest stage, Orlando Gill's journey is a testament to never giving up on your dream.
