The black lives matter movement and discussions surrounding racism and equality will almost always find roots in the transatlantic slave trade

@elonmusk Pure conflation to deflect the fact that the most recent form of European/American slavery still has an impact on today's societies.

I can give you lessons on this if needed.

For #BlackHistoryMonth we're celebrating the life of Ignatius Sancho, a composer, actor and writer. He was the first known person of African heritage to vote in a British election.

Sancho spent much of his life in Greenwich and has a plaque in the park: https://t.co/VOa43Zz8Fy

Thank you Mayor @SadiqKhan Hopefully a significant and meaningful slavery memorial in #london can be part of future #BlackHistoryMonth celebrations

[Sadiq Khan @SadiqKhan]

For generations, Black Londoners have made a huge contribution to our city’s success.

#BlackHistoryMonth is a time to reflect on the achievements of Black communities - but also acknowledge how much further we have to go to secure racial justice. #BHM

Look forward to this..

Announcing: US premiere of our new 6-part series about 400 years of human trafficking from Africa

The Atlantic is now a site of profound black trauma. But also witness to a story of resistance, accomplishment and hope

We uncover the sunken stories. @EPIXHD

Costing £1.4m, the Animals at War memorial inscription reads ..."to all the animals that served and died.."

[UK_Slavery Memorial @TSM_Bristol]

It seems a travesty to have monuments to animals lost at war and none of significance to the victims of slavery

@neilwallis1 The issue is the terrible imbalance of attitude toward the statues (of slave owners/supporters) and victims of slavery. Simple @bbcsml

Capitalism and Slavery (1944) by Eric Williams illustrates the dismantling of the British slave trade in depth! #slavery #Britain

[BBCSundayMorningLive @bbcsml]

Sunday, we discuss whether we should still commemorate supporters of slavery. Not just a US issue - Bristol and Oxford juggling with this.

[UK_Slavery Memorial @TSM_Bristol]

@bbcsml Looking foward to this much needed discussion!

[UK_Slavery Memorial @TSM_Bristol]

@afuahirsch The US/UN have started to address the balance. Its time the UK did too...
