Between 2013–2018, we had a whole bunch of films like Neram, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, Premam, Jacobinte Swargarajyam, CIA: Comrade in America, Njandukalude Naatil Oridavela — films where young men in their 20s were often figuring life out, struggling, messing up and trying to find their place.

Most of these characters were essentially losers in life. By the end, they either turned things around or remained more or less where they started.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit feels like a very interesting take on what those characters could have become in their 30s if they had never gotten married. And it works big time. Basically what happens if Premam Nivin meets Premalu Mamitha. The idea itself is so interesting, but what makes it work is the intriguing screenplay.

This is exactly the kind of Malayalam cinema I’ll always go back to — simple, neat and character-driven. Apart from heist films, this will always be my go-to genre. I loved this to the core. Every bit of it. I genuinely didn’t have a boring or dull moment.

The performances by Nivin, Mamitha, Sangeeth from Premalu, Shyam from Premalu and Vinay Forrt were so natural that it never felt like I was watching a film. It felt like watching real people and their lives unfold.

The lenswork, editing and music complement each other beautifully, making the film feel seamless.

Also, Angamaly Diaries is my all-time favourite Malayalam film. Every time I land in Kochi, I somehow think about that Angamaly vibe. But this film, despite being set in Angamaly, has a completely different tone and portrays a very different lifestyle. Both felt relevant and, more importantly, incredibly natural.

MUST watch it if you LOVE Malayalam films. ❤️
