Tonight Jalon Daniels won his first game as an NFL quarterback.
He was on the Prime Video set afterward when he stopped talking and waved somebody over.
"Ma, come here. Ma, come here."
Her name is Star.
Jalon Daniels' father made it clear he was not going to be part of their lives. Here is what his mother decided to do about that.
"I wanted to make sure that he never felt that feeling of not having Dad there."
So she worked full time for an insurance company and took a second seasonal job at Toys R Us.
She drove him to Pop Warner practices. She would not let him sleep over at friends' houses until high school, though he could bring ten of them to hers anytime.
And when he wanted to go to a party, there was a condition. She parked outside of it.
"She let me know when it was time to leave," he says, laughing. "An hour and a half before the party ended, we were on our way home."
Here is the other thing she told him, over and over.
She wanted him to grow up to be the kind of man anybody's daughter could bring home to her mother.
Now the football, which nobody handed him either.
His sophomore year at Narbonne High School in Los Angeles, the coaches moved him back down to the freshman team.
He transferred to Lawndale High School, won the job, and Lawndale went 14 and 2 and took the first state championship in school history.
His first scholarship offer came from Tennessee-Martin. He committed to Middle Tennessee State. Then Kansas came to see him in December of his senior year, and he flipped.
He gave the Kansas Jayhawks six seasons. In 2021 he beat Texas in Austin, where Kansas had not won a game since 1938. In 2022 he threw for 544 yards in the Liberty Bowl. Then a back injury took 2023 away, and most players leave at that point.
He stayed. He graduated with a 3.58 GPA. He was voted team captain four times, which no Kansas player had ever done. And with the first real money he was ever allowed to earn, he started a foundation for single mothers raising athletic children.
He named it after her.
In April, all 32 teams passed on him for seven rounds. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him as an undrafted free agent on May 8.
Tonight was his second career start. He went 19 of 25 for 189 yards and threw a touchdown to Bucky Irving. The Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys 24 to 16 for their first win of the season after losing their first four.
One win does not make anybody an NFL quarterback, and he would tell you that himself.
But when the cameras finally found him, the first thing he did was make sure they found her too.
"No matter what, I was present, and he always knew I was present."
Listening to Kelsey Mitchell's exit interview, I couldn't help but laugh a little.
Not because what she's describing isn't difficult. I'm sure it is.
But I continue to believe that one of the biggest adjustments happening in the WNBA right now is that these women are learning what it's like to play in a genuinely relevant, heavily scrutinized professional sports league.
KM talked about how hard it is being a Fever player. About waking up every day and giving your best, only for your best to not be enough for some people.
And my lifelong sports-fan reaction was basically:
Well...yeah. ๐
Ask an NFL kicker who misses a 38-yarder to lose a playoff game how many fans appreciate that he "gave his best."
Ask an NBA point guard who goes 3-for-17 in Game 7.
Ask an Iowa QB after three straight three-and-outs. ๐
She talked about how hard it is "showing up every day to compete for fans that may or may not like you."
Kelsey...
Sports fans have disliked players ON THEIR OWN TEAM since approximately 15 minutes after sports were invented. ๐
Iowa fans can love the Hawkeyes with every molecule in their bodies while simultaneously demanding that somebody be benched, fired, or launched directly into the sun.
That's SPORTS. ๐
And I've never seen a professional sports league collectively so consumed by social media discourse.
Players talk about tweets. Coaches talk about tweets. Reporters ask players about tweets. Other players respond to those comments. ESPN discusses the response. Then somebody's podcast discusses ESPN discussing the response to the response. ๐
Caitlin Clark didn't invent obnoxious sports fans.
She brought an enormous number of mainstream sports fans into a league that had never experienced this level of attention and scrutiny before.
And THAT'S the distinction.
What they're experiencing may genuinely be new for the WNBA.
It is absolutely NOT new for professional sports.
Fans second-guess you.
Fans criticize you.
Fans irrationally blame you for losses.
Fans love the superstar more than they love you.
Fans scream that you should pass her the damn ball.
Fans demand trades.
Fans say stupid shit on the internet.
Welcome to big-time sports! You've made it! ๐
For decades the WNBA wanted more attention. Bigger audiences. Packed arenas. Better TV ratings. More money. More relevance.
Well...
Mainstream sports relevance comes with mainstream sports bullshit. ๐
John Madden famously advised, "Never take points off the board." He strongly believed that if a penalty occurred on a successful field goal or extra point, coaches should accept the points rather than take them back to chase a touchdown. #Discuss
Found myself crying at 3am after watching this film ๐ญ its depiction of grief was bittersweet and real. Nickโs yearns soooo well as Wes. And his chemistry with Zoey was ๐ฅ The best romcom Iโve seen this year!
Now I need five more films with them as leads
#Raiders fans waking up to
- Two starting caliber QBs
- Front office executing a real plan
- Responsible contracts
- Positive national media attention
- 2nd-highest free agency spender
- 6 picks in first 4 rounds (4 in top 102)
- Maxx Crosby still a Raider
Wild: Pat McAfee DESTROYED Dan Orlovsky live on ESPN for saying Ty Simpson is a better QB than Fernando Mendoza.
"So the college football playoffs don't mean anything? This is why people are saying you are getting paid to say this."

The reason I am for the Paul Kelly casting is because, JFK Jr is literally the perfect archetype for Bruce Wayne
- Son of American โroyalty,โ embodying wealth, privilege, and glamour, just like Bruce Wayne
- Orphaned at a young age, carrying the tragic legacy of a fatherโs violent death, paralleling Batmanโs origin
- Charismatic, athletic, and mysterious public figure whose allure invited speculation about a hidden depth
So any actor that could fit JFK Jr, can perfectly fit Bruce Wayne
Gavin Newsom says Trump is "corrupt at a scale we've never seen"
Bro, lost track of $24 BILLION to black hole in homeless funding
And the High-Speed Rail is $100B+ over budget and still hasn't carried a single passenger
He is literally the definition of "scale we've never seen before" ๐
