Simple solution to making busted forecasts extinct: MORE funding to NWS. Let meteorologists work their magic. Firing NWS mets and cutting funding for research will lead to more of this, and worse
This insanity has to stop. All offices need their mets, but if this spreads to the Plains, Dixie, or any other regularly very active region—the quality of our services and safety is going down. We are cooked.
*Severe weather to return April 20–May 6*
I'm keeping tabs on a pattern that looks increasingly favorable for severe weather and tornadoes across parts of the Plains, Ozarks and Mid-South. This looks to be a bit farther west than the recent barrages of tornado storms.
The overarching pattern favors a pocket of cold air, low pressure and spin to become established in the Rockies. The jet stream will likely dip, allowing that cold air to spill south over the western U.S.
In the East, the jet stream will rise, with high pressure building into the Southeast. That will pump moisture northward across the central U.S.
The air masses will battle it out over the central states – and, with moisture in place, that clash will brew storms. The jet stream will also be blowing overhead, adding the needed wind energy for severe thunderstorms and perhaps tornadoes.
April and May are "that time of year" anyway. We've been quiet for the past few days, and likely will remain quiet until about April 17 or so. Thereafter, the pattern looks to flip to busier severe weather, with possible above-average tornado activity to round out the month and usher in May. @MyRadarWX
Today's legendary forecast by the @NWSSPC is clear proof of why we need a FULLY FUNDED National Weather Service.
Extremist Radical-Right Republicans must back off of our life-saving institutions.
🚨#BREAKING: A Tornado Emergency has been issued for an extremely large and violent tornado on the ground
📌#Lakecity | #Arkansas
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado emergency for Blytheville, Trumann, Lake city and Gosnell, Arkansas, as a confirmed, massive, and extremely violent tornado is on the ground, causing catastrophic destruction. As Storm chaser @BrandonCopicWx has captured footage of the tornado, emphasizing the severity of this life-threatening situation. Residents must seek shelter immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Do not wait to see or hear the tornado take action now. Anyone caught in its path is in extreme danger. Again, this is a confirmed, extremely large and dangerous tornado. Take cover immediately.
I find it very interesting that while we have several strongly rotating supercells with intense mesocyclones, not all of them are producing tornadoes and, oftentimes, it's only one or two that have a tornado on the ground at any given moment. Fascinating behavior from the supercells this afternoon.
I may be tired and a little hoarse, but as I said again and again on the Senate floor, this is a moment where we cannot afford to be silent, when we must speak up.
What’s most clear to me tonight is that this is just the beginning, that Americans across this country, no matter their title or party, are ready to be heard.
I believe that history will show we rose to meet this moment.
It will show we did not let the chaos and division go unanswered.
It will show that when our president chose to spread lies and sow fear, we chose to come together, to work together, and to rise together.
Weather forecasts about to get dicey… National Weather Service forced to cut weather balloon launches in half across the Midwest. Less data = less accurate forecasts. Blame the staff shortage.
Listen up, if you think basic facts about weather forecasting capabilities are "political," you're absolutely cooked. I will NEVER stop sounding the alarm when our ability to keep YOU and your family safe is compromised. This isn't politics. This is public safety. Full stop.
@zaneo_11 People need to learn the difference between a bust and a underperformance. I didn’t realize it was so hard for some people to understand the difference.
This is only the 3rd time since at least 2006 (when we can easily query our records), and likely only the 3rd time in SPC history based on available data, that a High Risk has been issued on Day 2.
The 2 previous times were:
4/14/2012
4/7/2006
Nikki Haley trashes Trump’s appointment of Tulsi Gabbard, saying she has sided with Russia, China, Iran & Syria against the US: “She said Trump turned the US into Saudi Arabia’s prostitute. DNI is not a place for a Russian-Iranian-Syrian-Chinese sympathizer.”
