The next time you’re feeling down, remember it's all about perspective. I got a friend who reads 2-3 books a week, works out twice a day, has no financial worries, & has people who want to have sex with him all the time & yet he constantly complains about how much he hates prison
@igorbobic Like most state political parties, the essential elements of the process are either in their state party bylaws, state election code, or both. What’s left is finding caucus location(s) and clarifying policy for non-party observers & voting method.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) voted 454–15 to recognize Israel's actions in Gaza as a genocide, divest from Palantir and GE Aerospace, lobby Congress for an arms embargo, and boycott certain products. They also say that criticism of the Israeli government is not inherently antisemitic.
They're the first major Christian denomination in the USA to formally label Israel's actions in Gaza a genocide.
This is a huge development and a critical escalation in how mainstream US religious institutions perceive Israel, so where's the news coverage? It happened last week, and I've barely seen anything about it in US mainstream media.
Just got off the phone with my college roommate.
His daughter was diagnosed with leukemia in January.
He has insurance. Good insurance. The kind you feel safe having.
7 months later:
Savings: wiped out. 401k: cashed early. Penalties and all. House: refinanced to cover the gaps insurance decided weren’t their problem.
He told me he’s not the same person anymore.
Said watching your child fight for her life while simultaneously fighting an insurance company over coverage codes does something to you that doesn’t go away.
They did everything right.
Two incomes. No debt. Responsible their whole lives.
One diagnosis undid all of it in 7 months.
And somewhere a health insurance CEO is getting a $30 million bonus this quarter.
I don’t know how people defend this system with a straight face.
I really don’t.
You're "just not that into politics?" Your boss is. Your landlord is. Your insurance company is. And every day they use their political power to keep your pay low, raise your rent, and deny you coverage.
It’s time to get into politics.
I’m not even that far left, certainly not DSA, but watching so many Democrats show blatant contempt for the party’s own voters is radicalizing me more than anything else has.
What is a party if not its voters?
Karl: You’ve got Josh Gottheimer, a Democratic member of Congress, who says, “Many of us believe, as do I, if you’re a socialist, you are not a Democrat.”
And in fact, they put out a manifesto today. Have you seen this thing?
Mamdani: Sounds pretty socialist to me.
Karl: It’s not a communist manifesto. It’s a moderate manifesto saying we are capitalists, not socialists. We believe in a growing, fair, and competitive economy, entrepreneurship, ownership. I mean, this is a direct response. They’ve made it clear what they think about what you did here on Tuesday.
Mamdani: Well, I mean, you know, that’s great, but what’s a party if not its voters?
And I’m proud to sit in front of you as the mayor of our city, having received more than a million votes a little less than a year ago.
And when we’re talking about these incredible congressional candidates, they won their races, and they won their races with a vision of what politics should be—one that actually speaks to working people.
And for a lot of people who ask themselves, “What does democratic socialism mean?” you can tell them the answer at a theoretical level: it’s the choice to extend democracy from the ballot box to the rest of their lives.
But in terms of what it means, over these last seven months, we’ve seen a city with democratic socialist principles at the heart of our administration. And what we’ve delivered has been record lows when it comes to murders and shootings.
Karl: So is it pragmatic democratic socialism?
Mamdani: I think democratic socialism, at heart, is pragmatic because, if we cannot deliver for working people, then what is this for? I'm not interested in writing a manifesto or frankly, in reading one. I'm interested in delivering. And that's exactly what we've been showing.
