Seit Juli 2022 wurde auf dem Gelände des früheren VW-Motorenwerks in Salzgitter eine Batteriezellfabrik gebaut. Mehr als eine Milliarde Euro sind bereits investiert. Vergleichbare Werke entstehen in Valencia (Start 2026) und St. Thomas in Kanada (2027). Konzernchef Oliver Blume bezeichnet den Neubau als wichtiges technologisches Signal für Europa und als zentralen Baustein der Konzernstrategie: Volkswagen ist damit der erste europäische Autobauer mit eigener Entwicklung und Produktion von Batteriezellen.

Der Produktionsstart erfolgt mit zunächst einigen Hundert Zellen pro Tag, soll aber rasch auf 600.000 bis 700.000 Zellen täglich steigen. Die geplante Jahreskapazität liegt bei 20 Gigawattstunden – ausreichend für rund 250.000 E-Autos. Zum Einsatz kommen die Zellen erstmals in den neuen Elektro-Kleinwagen VW ID. Polo und Cupra Raval, deren Produktion 2026 in Spanien anläuft. Der eigentliche Hochlauf der Zellfertigung in Salzgitter ist für 2026 vorgesehen.

Die konzernweite Einheitszelle soll bis zu 80 Prozent aller E-Autos abdecken und die Batteriekosten senken, die aktuell 30 bis 40 Prozent der Fahrzeugkosten ausmachen. Technisch sieht VW die Zelle auf Augenhöhe mit der Konkurrenz. Dennoch bleibt der Rückstand zu asiatischen Herstellern, insbesondere aus China, groß. Experten betonen die Bedeutung einer europäischen Batteriezellproduktion, auch wenn der Einstieg spät erfolgt.

Von ursprünglich größeren Plänen ist VW abgerückt: In Salzgitter geht zunächst nur ein Produktionsblock in Betrieb, weitere Werke sind derzeit nicht geplant. Der Ausbau hängt vom Tempo der E-Mobilität ab. Partner beim Aufbau ist der chinesische Hersteller Gotion; erste Testzellen wurden bereits in China produziert.

DER AKTIONÄR bleibt bei Volkswagen skeptisch. Trotz günstiger Bewertung gibt es zahlreiche Baustellen: In China überzeugen die ID-Modelle nicht, Softwareprobleme bestehen weiter und echte Produkt-Gamechanger fehlen. Günstigere Modelle und ein Fokus auf vertrautere Konzepte sollen Abhilfe schaffen. Ob das reicht, bleibt offen – insbesondere angesichts starker Konkurrenz bei preiswerten E-Autos.
